What is a Scooter?

Do I need a driver's license to ride a Scooter?

Yes.

To have the right to drive a gasoline scooter, you must: be at least 14 years old AND hold a class 6D driving license. If you already have a license or a valid probationary license for car (class 5) or motorcycle (class 6A, 6B or 6C), it is accepted. If you are not yet 18, you will need parental permission to obtain the permit. To obtain a Class 6D license, you must:

  • Have successfully completed the Road Safety Education Program for driving a moped.
  • Pass a visual test
  • Pass a theoretical exam

What is the procedure for getting the scooter license?

To obtain a permit for the class 6D scooter, you must take a 6-hour theory and practice course, given by a driving school recognized by the Quebec Transportation Association, and pass the theoretical examination and the visual test of the SAAQ. This permit allows you to drive a scooter only. If you are under the age of 18, you will need the written consent of your father, mother or legal guardian. If you are not a Canadian citizen, proof must be provided that you are allowed to stay in Canada for at least 6 months.

This course includes:

1. A theoretical part of 3 hours
2. Practical closed-circuit part of 3 hours – the last half hour is used for evaluation.

What is the minimum age for driving a scooter?

To drive a gasoline scooter or an electric scooter, you must be at least 14 years old.

Obligations to respect with the scooter license

If you have less than 5 years of experience

You must: Respect the zero alcohol rule and have less than 4 demerit points on your file.

If you have more than 5 years of experience

You must: Respect the rule of zero alcohol and that, until the age of 22 years.

Have less than 8 demerit points if you are under 23

If you are under 16, you are not allowed to carry a passenger. The fine is $ 100 plus other fees.

What are the costs of getting a scooter?

If you do not have a driver’s license:

What should I wear as scooter protection?

When driving a moped, the only protection you can really rely on is your helmet. It must comply with the standards and be certified at least: DOT. Asphalt grater, you have to wear the right clothes! It is advisable to be dressed with long pants and long sweater, in addition to wearing gloves. To ensure good visibility with motorists, you can opt for clothing in light colors, fluo, with reflective stripes.

Head injuries are often the most serious. Wear a well-fitting, new and well-fastened helmet.

Is it better to buy a gasoline scooter or an electric scooter?

It all depends on the use that will be made of it. The gasoline scooter is a small recreational vehicle registered and can move in the car traffic. However, it is forbidden to travel on motorways and expressways. The gasoline scooter allows you to travel longer distances and use the roads. It is therefore a fast and efficient means of transport, which offers a very good autonomy and low cost. The electric scooter, meanwhile, is considered a bicycle assisted. This means of transport allows you to move on bike paths (see F.A.Q on this subject) and on the roadsides. This vehicle is not registered and therefore does not roll in car traffic.

Thus, the electric scooter finds its practical side for short distances (+ -70km on a battery charge) and for very low costs. You do not need plates, no insurance, no license and no gas! To conclude, if you hesitate between buying a gasoline scooter or an electric scooter, you must think about 3 things above all: your needs in terms of travel, the distance you think you have to/want to travel and the related costs.

Obligations to respect to drive an electric scooter

  • The rules that apply to all cyclists, including the Highway Safety Code and the obligation to wear a helmet, must be respected.
  • It is permitted to drive on public roads, except on motorways and their access roads.
  • There is no need to register an electric bike (assisted bicycle). However, we do recommand to insurance them in case of thieft.

Do I need a license to drive an electric scooter?

Is it true that the 4-stroke engine is more enduring?

No, not for a 50cc Scooter.

A 2-stroke motor scooter develops about 4.5 HP (Horsepower). The same Scooter, but with 4-stroke engine, develops between 2.8 and 3.2 HP (Horsepower). (See F.A.Q. on this subject)

Both weigh approximately the same weight, about 200 lbs. Add to that the weight of the driver, say an average 130 lbs.

What is a 3 Wheelers?

The 3 Wheelers differs from an electric scooter in its shape and size and it is closer to a vehicle for people with Reduced Mobility. It still has several features of an electric scooter, including its maximum speed of 32 km/h, its handlebars and its brakes. For these reasons, the 3 Wheelers is appreciated by many, since it remains more powerful and thus, more fun than a Mobility Scooter (4 wheels).

Do I need a license to ride a 3 Wheelers?

The same regulations as a gas scooter or an electric scooter apply. It is therefore necessary to hold a class 6D driver’s license for the 14 to 17 age group only.

A 3 Wheelers, how does it work?

The 3 Wheelers, simply, runs on batteries. Generally, the number of batteries varies between 4 and 5. Here is how the models are classified:

  • 4 batteries of 12V: it is a 3 wheelers with 48V for a range of about 45km per charge.
  • 5 batteries of 12V: it is a 3 wheelers with 60V for a range of about 60 km per charge.

As you will have understood, the higher the number of batteries, the greater the autonomy (on a battery charge). Wattage is the strength of the engine. The more powerful the vehicle, the easier it will be when the route is inclined. To move forward, it is necessary to turn the acceleration handle, to brake it is necessary to press on the brake levers, like a bicycle. How are the batteries connected?

The batteries (4 or 5) are connected in series. What is the life of my batteries?

The life of your batteries is about 250 to 300 charges. This is equivalent to about 3 years.

How to conserve your batteries?

To conserve your batteries, they must be recharged at least every month, even when you do not use them a lot, or not at all. A battery connected to a circuit discharges about 3% per day. So, after a month of inactivity, it will usually be flat. Never recharge the batteries for more than 24 hours. In winter, you must follow this procedure as well. When should I charge my 3 Wheelers?

It must be understood, above all, that the life of your batteries is about 250 to 300 charges. Thus, every time you plug them, you decrease their life. For this reason, it is recommended to wait until your batteries are sufficiently discharged. To know the level of your batteries, rely on your indicator on the dashboard.

Attention: For an excellent management of your batteries, we recommend to manage your displacements and to calculate the mileage traveled (approximately), in order to avoid running out of batteries during your displacements.

What is the cost of the batteries?

The cost of the batteries depends on the amperage (AH). As an example, a 12-amp battery will retail for about $50.00 while a 20-amp battery will retail for about $ 70.00.

Can I add an additional battery?

For several reasons, it is not at all advisable to install more batteries on an electric vehicle than what was originally intended by the manufacturer or the merchant. Indeed, this will significantly increase the weight of the vehicle, which may weaken the chassis of it.

However, if you absolutely want to increase the battery capacity on your vehicle, it is essential to never exceed the required voltage. Otherwise, you risk “short-circuiting” the control box, or even igniting the wiring.

My batteries have swollen, why?

A charger left for more than 24 hours on a charge may cause the batteries to swell. Thus, it is important to know that the charger does not stop charging until it reaches the required amperage level.
This is why if one of the batteries proves to be defective, it will cause an overload, which will result in the boosting of the other batteries.

What is the winter maintenance?

During the winter, it is best to keep the vehicle warm (at least up to 5 degrees). Also, be sure to charge it every month for up to 15 hours. If you can not leave your vehicle warm, you can always store it at our store about 250.00$.

Can I drive in the rain?

Since it’s an electric vehicle, it does not mix well with water. It is therefore recommended not to drive in the rain. Can I leave my vehicle outside during the night?

No.
Generally, thieves tend to occur during the night, even if the device is equipped with a lock or not. In the event that there is no alternative, we recommend covering the machine with a waterproof cover. Thus, the latter will have the advantage of protecting your vehicle from the rain in addition to keep it away from the eyes of thieves.

Tire pressure?

The air pressure inside the tires varies from one vehicle to another. In most cases, the information is visible on the tire as “PSI”. Generally, the air pressure varies from 30 to 40 PSI.

Note that for better comfort, it is advisable to have a slightly lower air pressure in the front wheels than for those in the rear. What is a Mobility Scooter?

Equipped with 4 wheels, the engine power can vary between 250W and 2000W, while the maximum speed varies between 8 km / h and 23 km / h. A Mobility Scooter, how does it work?

The Mobility Scooter is generally equipped with 2 batteries of 12 Volts and the wattage is between 250W and 2000W. It is a vehicle adapted for people with reduced mobility.
