Mobility scooter

Sometime called a four-wheeler, the mobility scooter is a small electric vehicle for people with reduced mobility. Equipped with 4 wheels, the motor power can vary between 250W and 2000W, while the maximum speed varies between 8 km/h and 25 km/h. The mobility scooter is almost always equipped with a transport basket, either in the front or in the back. The larger models are often the most comfortable, however, they may be less practical for indoor use only, due to the larger dimensions.
The smaller models can usually be disassembled into a few pieces so that they can be easily transported in a vehicle from one place to another. On the other hand, since the size is smaller, they often have smaller wheels and are less ideal for outdoor use.

The mobility scooter, quite simply, runs on batteries. Generally, the number of batteries varies between 4 and 6. Here is then how the models are classified:

4 batteries of 12V: it is a scooter with 48V for a range of about 40km.
5 batteries of 12V: it's a scooter with 60V for a range of about 50 km.

You will have understood it thus, the more the number of batteries, the more the autonomy (on a recharge of battery) is big. As for the Wattage, it is the strength of the engine. The more powerful the vehicle is, the easier it will be when the road is inclined. To move forward, you have to turn the throttle, to brake you have to press the brake levers, like a bicycle. The scooter is always equipped with a front light, turn signals, brake lights, mirrors and a battery level indicator.
When the scooter is completely discharged, you must use the charger to plug it into a regular 120V outlet. It is recommended not to use an extension cord.

The batteries (4, 5 or 6) are connected in series. To connect the batteries in series, always reverse the polarity (+ and -) from one battery to the other, i.e. from positive to negative. In some cases, a vehicle may require both a series and parallel connection. For more information on batteries, see FAQ "A scooter, how does it work?"

The life of your batteries is about 250 to 300 charges. This is equivalent to about 3 years.

To keep your batteries in good condition, they should be recharged at least every month, even when you don't use them much or at all. A battery connected to a circuit discharges about 3% per day. So, after a month of inactivity, it will usually be flat. Never recharge batteries for more than 24 hours. In winter, you should follow this procedure as well. However, if you absolutely want to increase the battery capacity of your vehicle, it is essential to never exceed the required voltage. Otherwise, you risk "shorting" the control box and even igniting the wiring.

A charger left on a charge for more than 24 consecutive hours can cause the batteries to swell. It is important to know that the charger does not stop charging until it reaches the required amperage level. This is why if one of the batteries is defective, it will cause an overcharge, which will result in overvoltage of the other batteries.

During the winter, it is best to keep the vehicle warm (at least above 5 degrees). Also, make sure to charge it every month, for a maximum of 15 hours. If you can't leave your vehicle in a warm place, you can always store it at our premises.

Since it's an electric vehicle, it doesn't do well with water. It is therefore recommended not to drive in the rain. On the other hand, if by misfortune you are on the road and a small shower appears, don't panic, it's no more serious than it needs to be. On the other hand, if it's a big shower, it is more prudent to find a shelter. We advise you to equip yourself with a protective cover.

In the event that there is no other alternative, we recommend covering the vehicle with a waterproof cover. This cover will protect your vehicle from the rain and will also keep it out of the eyes of thieves.

The air pressure inside the tires varies from vehicle to vehicle. In most cases, the information is visible on the tire as "PSI". Generally, the air pressure varies from 30 to 40 PSI.
Note that for better comfort, it is recommended to have a slightly lower air pressure in the front wheels than in the rear. Indeed, it is important to know that a high air pressure will increase the range, but will decrease the comfort of the driver. This rule also applies in the opposite case, where a low air pressure will increase comfort but decrease the range of the device.

Unfortunately, if you have lost the spare key you received when you purchased your vehicle, you will have to change the entire ignition of the vehicle. It is strongly recommended that you be prepared and leave a spare key at home.

Three wheeler

A 3 wheelers is equipped with :

an electric motor (not gasoline) and a rechargeable battery

In practice, the electric scooter differs from an electric scooter by its shape and its dimensions, and it is closer to a vehicle for people with reduced mobility. It still retains many of the characteristics of an electric scooter, including its maximum speed of 32 km/h, its handlebars and its hand brakes. For this reason, the scooter is appreciated by many, since it is more efficient and therefore more fun than a mobility scooter.

The same regulations apply as for an electric bicycle or scooter. It is therefore necessary to have a class 6D driver's license for the 14 to 17 age group only. 

The 3 wheeler is generally equipped with 2 batteries of 12 Volts and the wattage is between 250W and 2000W. It is a vehicle adapted for people with reduced mobility. The device moves forward and backward when pressure is applied to the arm installed for this purpose. When the pressure is removed, the vehicle brakes automatically thanks to the electromagnetic system.

Electric scooter

Officially called "electrically assisted bicycle" (EAB), the electric bicycle is equipped :

an electric motor (not gasoline) not exceeding 500 watts and a rechargeable battery. When the driver does not use the electric motor, the EAB must allow pedaling like a conventional bicycle
a handlebar and a pedal
2 or 3 wheels that are in contact with the ground

It all depends on how it will be used. The gasoline scooter is a small, registered recreational vehicle, and as such, it can travel in traffic. However, it is not allowed to travel on highways and expressways.  The gas scooter allows you to travel longer distances and use the roads. It is therefore a fast and efficient means of transportation, which offers a very good autonomy at low cost. The electric scooter, on the other hand, is considered an assisted bicycle. This means of transportation allows you to move on bicycle paths (see F.A.Q. on this subject) and on the sides of roads. This vehicle is not registered and therefore does not run in traffic.
Thus, the electric scooter is practical for short distance trips (+-70km on a battery charge) and for the very low costs involved. You don't need plates, no insurance, no license and no gas! To conclude, if you are hesitating between buying a gas scooter or an electric scooter, you need to think about 3 things first: Your travel needs, the distance you think you need/want to travel and the costs involved.

Gas Scooter

Officially called a moped, its basic characteristics are as follows

1- Gasoline engine 49.9cm3 maximum or electric motor
2- Maximum speed of 70 km/h
3- Automatic transmission
4- Frame with 2 or 3 wheels. If the vehicle has an engine of more than 50cm3 - or a maximum speed of more than 70 km/h or a manual transmission - it is not a moped or scooter, it is a motorcycle. To drive a motorcycle, you must have a class 6A, 6B or 6C motorcycle license, depending on the engine size. A Maxiscooter is, therefore, a motorcycle.

Yes.
To be eligible to drive a gas scooter, you must: be at least 14 years old AND have a Class 6D driver's licence. If you already have a valid car (class 5) or motorcycle (class 6A, 6B or 6C) licence or probationary licence, it is accepted. If you are not yet 18 years of age, you will need parental permission to obtain the licence. To obtain a class 6D licence, you must

Successfully complete the Traffic Safety Education Program - Driving a Moped.
 Pass a visual test
Pass a theory test

To obtain a Class 6D scooter licence, you must take a 6-hour theory and practical course at a driving school recognized by the Association québécoise des transports and pass the SAAQ theory test and visual test. This permit allows you to drive a scooter only. If you are under 18 years of age, you will need the written consent of your parent or legal guardian. If you are not a Canadian citizen, you must provide proof that you are authorized to stay in Canada for a period of at least 6 months.
This course includes:

1. A 3 hour theoretical part
2. A 3 hour closed circuit practical part - the last half hour is for evaluation.

To drive a gas or electric scooter, you must be at least 14 years old.

The Scooter is a restricted vehicle. As such, the Scooter can:

travel only on roads with a speed limit of 70 km/h or less, provided that these roads are not highways or controlled access roads (a controlled access road is a public road that can only be entered or exited at specially designated areas).
cross at right angles on roads with a speed limit of more than 70 km/hr, provided such roads are not highways or controlled access roads

If you have less than 5 years of experience

You must: Meet the zero alcohol rule and have less than 4 demerit points on your record.
If you have more than 5 years of experience
You must: Comply with the zero alcohol rule and that is until you are 22 years old.
Have less than 8 demerit points if you are under 23 years old
12 demerit points if you are 23 or 24 years old
15 demerit points if you are 25 or older
If you are under 16, you are not allowed to carry a passenger. The fine is $100 plus other fees.

If you do not have a driver's license:

Insurance - There is no obligation to insure your scooter. However, it is recommended in case of accident or theft.

If you already have a driver's license: You only have to pay for your registration.

When riding a scooter, the only protection you can really count on is your helmet. It must comply with the standards and be certified at least: DOT. The asphalt is rough, you must wear the right clothes! It is recommended to wear long pants and a long sweater, as well as gloves. To ensure good visibility to motorists, you can opt for light colored clothing, fluorescent, with reflective strips.
Head injuries are often the most serious. Wear a well-fitting, recent and well-fastened helmet.

The 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines work on the same principle
* A piston moves inside a cylinder, it is connected to a crankshaft through a connecting rod.
* The piston has an alternating movement, from top to bottom, this movement is transformed into rotary motion, through the connecting rod and the crankshaft.
* To move the piston, energy is needed, which is a mixture of air and gasoline, compressed between the top of the piston and the top of the cylinder (the cylinder head), which, when it comes into contact with a spark caused by a spark plug, causes the implosion, a source of power.
* A carburettor, which will allow to dose the arrival of gasoline and air
* An air filter to prevent dust from entering the cylinder
* A coil, a magnetic flywheel to supply electricity to the spark plug.
* The whole thing makes noise, so a muffler will be installed to attenuate it.
* All these moving parts cause friction and heating, so it will be necessary to oil the moving parts and cool the whole. To save weight and space, the engine will be cooled by air, the flywheel equipped with fins will act as a fan.

The power of the motor is the capacity of the motor to provide work in a given time. Its calculation is a clever mix of torque and speed.

We speak of engine power in KW or CV (kilowatt - horse) or HP (horse power).
So 1 HP = 0.736 KW = 0.98 hp.

What is necessary to be able to compare the data at the time of a purchase:
For a 4-stroke engine we roughly establish that for 50 cubic centimeters we obtain a power of 1 HP or 0.736 Kw. For a 2-stroke engine we only need 25 cc. What is "CC" or cubic centimeter? It is the volume of the engine cylinder, of course this result varies depending on the speed of rotation and the compression ratio.

2-stroke engine: In this engine, the piston makes only one turn of the crankshaft to complete a full cycle (compression, explosion starts again). The explosion is the source of energy.  When it comes to engines, the less time it takes for a complete cycle, the more powerful the engine is. Remember: the power of the engine is the capacity of the engine to provide work in a given time. That's what we're asking of it, right?

Its high rotation speed, from 5000 to 10000 rpm
Its lightness
A lubrication ensured from the start, and in all the positions (absence of oil sump, lubrication by the mixture air-petrol-oil).

4-stroke engine: In this engine, the piston makes two turns of the crankshaft to complete a full cycle. The gasoline and oil are not in contact. It can be seen that on two high positions, only one provides the energy.
-Engine power for 50cc of the order of 1 hp.
-Moderate rotation speed, from 3000 to 4500 rpm.
Weak points:

Low efficiency, on two turns of the crankshaft, only one develops energy.
Heavier engine
Difficulty in running the engine at high inclinations, due to splash lubrication, the inclination of the engine should not exceed 45° with a correct oil level.

No, not for a 50cc Scooter.
A 2-stroke Scooter develops about 4.5 HP (HorsePower - Force). The same Scooter, but with a 4 stroke engine, develops between 2.8 and 3.2 HP (HorsePower - Force). (See F.A.Q. on this subject)
Both weigh about the same, about 200 lbs. Let's add to that the weight of the driver, let's say 130 lbs on average.
Let's do the equation...
Scooter (200 lbs) + rider (130 lbs) = 330 lbs / per (the number of forces)

Scooter with 4-stroke engine
1 HP for 103 lbs
Yes, but the 4-stroke engine technology is much better, like for a car, isn't it?
Let's make a comparison with a car... let's say the Honda Civic.
The Honda Civic develops 137 HP. It weighs 2749 lbs. Add to that a driver weighing 300 lbs.
Let's do the equation...
2749 lbs + 300 lbs = 3049 / 137 HP

1 HP for 22.25 lbs
In conclusion, specifically for 50cc scooters, the 2-stroke engine is much more appropriate since the scooter's engine is used more than any other vehicle on the world's roads. Thus, the 4-stroke engine is not suitable for this type of vehicle and it is less durable, since it is constantly overstressed.

When you buy a new scooter, a good break-in is necessary. Since the engine is new, it should not be subjected to excessive stress during the first 1000 km. The moving parts of the engine must wear and break in each other to obtain the correct running clearances. During this period, avoid driving at full throttle for long periods of time and avoid any excess that could cause the engine to overheat.
